We lately found that a spy for our competitor had bugged our office meeting area with a hidden camera. This caused a huge loss for the business. Being head of security I needed to take extra measures in order to keep it from happening once more.

“Columbo” a 4-Channel Embedded DVR 

 Joaquin Torres flipped the lights on in the back office of the Resort.

 A scrawny, young trainee named Lonnie sheepishly trailed him. “And here,” said the manager,  ”is our set of eyes.”  He motioned at an unassuming box about the size of a home computer, sitting on a shelf next to a large LCD monitor.

“So, what does it do?” Lonnie asked.

Instead of having to sift through hours and hours of videotape, the system records everything to a quiet hard drive. “We’ve got four cameras set up,” said Joaquin, “and it gets ‘em all.”  “So, it’s kind of like a TiVo?” asked Lonnie.

 ”Son, I don’t know what a TiVo is, but I’d call it more of a Columbo,” said Mr. Torres”. He explained how, a few weeks earlier, someone had broken into a few of the guest rooms in the middle of the night. As soon as the first guest reported something missing, at about 4 a.m., Joaquin called the sheriff and the Resort owner, who lived about a forty-five minute away.

Joaquin told Lonnie how the Resort owner was able to log in to the security recorder from his house, using the Internet. Because motion sensors trigger the recorder, the owner didn’t have to wade through hours of useless footage. Based on the time frame that the guest provided, the owner selected a set of trigger events.

Within a few minutes, he found clips of a likely suspect, and emailed them to the sheriff’s office and to the media. By the time the morning news hit the airwaves at 6 a.m., law enforcement knew the thief’s name and the news anchor was playing those clips to solicit tips. “We had that boy in custody by lunchtime,” bragged the manager.  “And with Columbo here keeping track of everything around here, I get to start taking some nights off!”

Pet Monitoring System

PET MONITORING SYSTEM

Janet had always been an avid pet lover her whole life. She couldn’t stand to see animals hurt or suffering so needless to say she had quite a collection of unwanted pets that made her very happy.

On her way to the grocery store one afternoon she had to take a side street due to a car accident.  She was passing through an older neighborhood when something caught her eye and she immediately stopped the car. In a front yard was a dog tied to a chain with no food, water or shade.

This infuriated her so much that she knew she had to do something. She went to the house and knocked on the door, looked in the windows and to her surprise the house was empty. Someone moved out and left their dog!

Janet knew she had just inherited a new friend. She got the dog home, bathed and fed it. She named her new friend Muggs.  Muggs quickly found his place in the pack and loved his new home.

Shortly after, Janet came concerned because items around the house would go missing. She suspected it to be Muggs because things like this never happened before. Bread would be missing from the counter. They had gone through 2 TV remotes in a month.

So Janet invested in a small surveillance system that connects to her computer via a USB port. She easily installed it on her home computer, put up 4 cameras around the house and waited.

Proof is in the recorder!

 ”That’s the third time this week that one of my pictures has gone missing,” Taundra shrieked. Joe tried to eat his steak in peace, but his bride wouldn’t let the subject drop. “I told you that when I moved in, we would have to talk about whether Carrie could stay on as our housekeeper. “She’s been with me for years,” Joe replied, “And little Michaela just turned three. It wouldn’t be right. “Still,” Taundra said, “you’ve got to do something about this theft. If it’s picture frames today, what will it be tomorrow? “I’m still not sure where your picture frames are going,” said Joe, “but give me one week to prove that Carrie’s innocent. If I’m wrong, I’ll let her go immediately. Deal?” “Deal,” said Taundra. Joe wasn’t rich, but he earned a good living. Before he met Taundra, he hired Carrie to clean up after him for a few hours every day. In fact, it was Joe’s neat house that got Taundra interested in him in the first place. He was determined to make sure his trusted housekeeper got a fair shake. The next day, Joe set-up the Fan hidden camera in the living room.

Little Michaela traipsed around the room, finally fixing her eyes on one of Taundra’s shiny silver frames. She grabbed it, hugged it tight, and lifted up the couch cushion.  There, she carefully laid it down with the other three missing picture frames.
